Rabbi Daniel Lapin, author of the book Thou Shall Prosper, likes to use Walter William’s description of money as “certificates of performance”. I love that description of money (and work).
He believes that making money comes from serving your fellow human beings in a way they value and appreciate. In his view, work (and business) is a spiritual undertaking because it requires that you serve someone in a way that they appreciate.
When you provide a service that someone wants, they show their appreciation by giving you certificates of performance. It’s part of the virtuous cycle of life.
Provide value, receive value. Kind of like work more, receive more. Although I’ll be the first to admit that it is not always a straight line from work more to receive more. Sometimes it is a wiggly path. But that’s OK. It can make the process even more interesting to wiggle your way through to the certificates of performance. 😊
Rabbi Lapin says “Life is business, and business is life. Learn one, and you will have learned the other.”
Here’s to earning many more certificates of performance in your work and in your life. And enjoying the process, the wiggle, as much as possible.
