The Voice in My Head

January 1, 2021

“The voice in your head is going to determine the quality of your life more than anything else.”

On the Tim Ferris Show (podcast) in October 2020, Tim talked with Naval Ravikant. Naval brought that sentence up in my mind (pretty sure he said it word for word). He attributed the concept to Michael Singer who wrote the book The Untethered Soul.

Here are a few quotes from that book that I really like:

“In case you haven’t noticed, you have a mental dialogue going on inside your head that never stops. It just keeps going and going. Have you ever wondered why it talks in there? How does it decide what to say and when to say it? How much of what it says turns out to be true? How much of what it says is even important?”

“The best way to free yourself from this incessant chatter is to step back and view it objectively.”

“Don’t think about it; just notice it.”

"There is nothing more important to true growth than realizing that you are not the voice of your mind – you are the one who hears it.”

I have been trying to pay closer attention to what that voice in my head is saying to me throughout the day. The point in paying closer attention to it is to see if I can, over time, “teach” it to be a better friend and helper to me. And be aware of when it is talking shit and being a jerk.

I believe it is true that we allow our “inner roommate” to talk to us in a way that we would never allow another human to talk to us. So, I am trying to pay a little more attention to the voice and see if there are small things I can do to teach the little dude in there to behave (to talk to me) in a more helpful and uplifting way.

I’m trying to remind that little asshole to Be Nice!!! 😊
